The Caixa Geral de Depósitos that we know today is the culmination of an evolution that began long before its foundation in April 1876, since the spirit that presided over its foundation was already present in the activities developed by other institutions (Public Depository and Ark of the Orphans).
Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD) was created by the Letter of Law of April 10, 1876, in the reign of D. Luís, at the time Minister of Finance Serpa Pimentel and president of the 34th Constitutional Government Fontes Pereira de Melo.
